Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday called on governments, telecom operators, technology companies and financial institutions across the world to jointly build a global framework to prevent cyber fraud amid rising challenges from deepfake or synthetic video content.
“Cyber fraud and cyber crime also do not respect borders; they have already crossed boundaries. A person sitting in one country can commit a crime in a third country with the help of another country. We are also seeing how big a challenge deep-fakes have become. Therefore, it is essential that we work on a global framework for this. Governments, technology companies, telecom operators, and financial institutions must all join this framework,” Modi said while addressing Indian industry leaders at the 10th edition of the India Mobile Congress.
The PM also sought the cooperation of the GSMA and the world's telecom operators to create a global mechanism that can stop such fraud before it reaches people. “India has learned a lot from its experience in this direction, and India is always ready to share its experiences with the world,” he added.
The PM noted that it was essential to strengthen the ‘security framework’ associated with telecom and digital technology at a time when phone security and network security were priorities for all Indians.
