New to ChatGPT? Here's how to learn in 15 minutes — this lesson plan could even work for your parents

I’m sure most of the people in their 20s and 30s have become the household IT expert in their parents’ eyes.

There have been plenty of moments when my mom has screamed in horror over the Wi-Fi connection being down, called on me to fix it, and I've saved the day with my simple “press the restart button on the router” fix. I’ve also stepped in to show my dad how to attach a document to an email, give my grandmother a quick lesson on how to scan something with a printer and even expose my aunt to the wonders of ordering dinner through a food delivery app.

The older folks in my family have begun referring to AI as “ChatGPT” in the same way they still refer to video games as “Nintendo.” And they’ve been requesting my assistance with trying to wrap their head around using the chatbot that’s become synonymous with the trending technology.

So I came up with a short and simple lesson plan for AI beginners who want to start using ChatGPT (including my parents).

Right from the jump, I chose to forgo teaching ChatGPT beginners about all the technical jargon that comes with jumping into the world of AI. I feel like there’s no need to confuse someone who’s never used an AI tool before by hitting them with expert terms like “Large Language Model” and “Token.”

To start my 15-minute beginner course on how to use ChatGPT, I think it’s worth explaining what it can do.
