Under-pressure Michael Carrick goes in search of a much-needed European win against the Italian giants.
Struggling Manchester United will be hoping to turn around its recent form on Tuesday in this key Champions League fixture as it hosts Roma, a team that has traditionally struggled at Old Trafford.
Currently in 21st place in the UCL standings, the Red Devils last registered a win of any sort over two months ago in this competition against Champions League newcomers Sabah. That winless run has seen manager Michael Carrick come under immense pressure, and a defeat here following Saturday’s abject 2-0 loss in the English Premier League to Chelsea on Saturday could seal the end of the former midfield star’s reign after just nine months in charge.
Roma has meanwhile made an unbeaten start to its Serie A campaign and has been somewhat unlucky not to have picked up more points so far. Kicking off their campaign with a steady 1-1 stalemate in Istanbul at Fenerbahçe, Gian Piero Gasperini’s players then let a 3–1 lead against Real Madrid slip, eventually losing 4–3 at home to the Spanish giants.
A 4-0 hammering of Slovan Bratislava in their most recent UCL game saw the Giallorossi bounce back in style; however, today’s game against an out-of-form United offers a perfect opportunity to climb closer to an automatic round of 16 spot. A win for the Italians would be their first at this ground in this competition, having lost all three of their prior UCL visits to the Theatre of Dreams .
