Former Liverpool midfield great Xabi Alonso returns to Anfield for the first time as Chelsea boss on Wednesday for this intriguing Carabao Cup clash between two of the biggest teams in the English Premier League.
Alonso made 210 appearances for Liverpool as a player, scoring a memorable goal in its 2005 Champions League final triumph over AC Milan. He was widely expected to succeed both Jürgen Klopp and Arne Slot as manager of the Reds.
Andoni Iraola, the former Bournemouth boss and Alonso’s childhood friend from the Basque region of Spain, instead got the Kop job in the summer. The two Spanish coaches enter this fourth-round cup match after contrasting fortunes for their clubs at the weekend. Liverpool’s impressive 2-0 home win over Brighton extended its winning streak to four games, while Chelsea suffered its first defeat in eight years to London rivals Tottenham at Stamford Bridge.
Liverpool takes on Chelsea on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at Anfield, with kickoff set for 8 p.m. GMT. That makes it a 4 p.m. ET or 1 p.m. PT start in the US and Canada and a 7 a.m. AEST kickoff in Australia on Thursday morning.
Today’s Carabao Cup clash at Anfield will be available to stream in the US on Paramount Plus.
Paramount Plus has two plans: Paramount Plus Essential and Paramount Plus Premium. Essential costs $9 per month and includes ads and a sampling of Showtime programming. Premium removes ads and unlocks more Showtime titles, among other perks, for $14 per month.
