Senior living is evolving beyond simply providing safe, comfortable homes. For Sharad Gadsing, Founder, Cradle Of Life, the opportunity lies in rethinking what life after 55 can look like from thoughtfully designed homes and active communities to specialised services, technology and flexible ownership models that put residents’ aspirations at the centre. He shared his thoughts in an exclusive interview with YourStory
YourStory: Cradle Of Life was inspired by your parents' experience after retirement. What did that experience reveal about what was missing in India's senior-living market?
Sharad Gadsing: The idea began when my parents chose to spend their retirement at our farmhouse, hoping to live an independent, peaceful and easy life close to nature. On paper, it seemed ideal. Over time, however, we realised that a beautiful home and quiet surroundings were not enough. Everyday life could still become inconvenient and disconnected, with their independence dependent on the availability and reliability of support staff.
While exploring senior-living options, we found that most solutions were either built around ageing-related needs or positioned as luxury real estate. Safety, accessibility, healthcare and emergency support are essential, but to us, these are hygiene factors they enable life; they should not define it.
Today's seniors are healthier, more independent and better informed. They are unwilling to let age define how they live. This led us to ask: once the basic concerns of ageing are taken care of, what will make someone look forward to each day? Cradle Of Life emerged from our attempt to answer that question and reimagine what life after 55 could truly be.
