James McAvoy Almost Played Picard In a ‘Star Trek’ TV Prequel

After playing young Patrick Stewart in X-Men, James McAvoy apparently loved it so much, he tried to do it again, but with Star Trek.

On Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, the actor talked about approaching the team behind the sci-fi franchise to play a young version of Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard. “We nearly did it. […] All I really want to do in my career is play young versions of Patrick,” he laughed. As he told it, this would’ve been “a one-off standalone season” called Mutiny on the Stargazer about Picard’s time as captain of the Federation vessel, a position he held for over two decades.

Some of that tenure has been shown in Next Generation and Picard, plus a series of novels by Michael Jan Friedman. McAvoy wanted Mutiny to explore “what really happened” when Picard was in charge and “the secret he’s been holding onto his entire career.” This is something the Star Trek team apparently took seriously, since he said they were “into it” and multiple talks were had—and then “logistical issues” prevented further motion on the series. (Depending on when he pitched this, he presumably means plans for the Stewart-led Picard series were already underway.)

“I just go to bed and think about it at night,” said McAvoy of the unfulfilled pitch. Sad, too, for fans of Picard (the character) and the actor himself, since it’s not every day one tries to get a project for a franchise they like off the ground.
