The Mini Evo 2 from Fujifilm’s Instax brand is a hybrid digital camera and instant film printer. Like other hybrids, it combines the convenience of digital and the fun of analog instant film. Multiple “lens” and filter options allow for a variety of aesthetics that will look great on social media and printed out.
Image quality is quite good for a camera like this, with decent color, contrast and detail. I’ve seen too many “fun” cameras lately that go all-in on cool looks but ignore picture quality entirely. The printed images, either taken with the camera or transferred from your phone, are quite vibrant. A more muted Natural print mode is also available.
My only complaint with the Evo 2 is that it’s a little bulky, which is understandable given there’s a film cartridge inside. Perhaps as a consequence of the size and shape, the button layout is a little odd as well. Overall, though, this is an actually fun camera with some equally enjoyable built-in effects.
Inside the lovely retro exterior, the Mini Evo 2 is a typical inexpensive camera. The small, 1/2.77-inch sensor is similar to many phone camera sensors. While image sensor size isn’t everything, don’t expect great low-light performance.
If you’re shooting in low light, though, the Evo 2 has a built-in flash that’s bright enough to give you that washed-out 90s and 2000s-style digital camera vibe. You need to be careful, though, as the flash is positioned next to one of the two shutter buttons.
