India’s 5G capex cycle enters a new phase: Ericsson’s Andres Vicente on what comes next

Ericsson expects India's telecom operators to enter a more measured investment phase after the large-scale 5G rollout. Andres Vicente says future spending will focus on network intelligence, core capabilities and systems that support advanced services. He also sees fixed wireless access, differentiated connectivity and India's growing role as Ericsson's manufacturing and export hub as key developments.

India's 5G rollout has moved into a new phase, with the focus shifting from building network coverage to making those networks more intelligent and finding new ways to monetise them. Andres Vicente, CEO of Southeast Asia, Oceania & India at Ericsson, told CNBC-TV18 that India has already made a significantly larger investment in 5G coverage than many other markets. The next phase is expected to involve incremental spending on network intelligence, core capabilities and the systems needed to manage more advanced services. Why another 2023-style capex spike is unlikely India's 5G investment has already covered much of the network rollout. Vicente said mid-band coverage, which is required to launch differentiated 5G services, has reached 95% of India's population, compared with 45% globally.

That means the next investment cycle is unlikely to resemble the spending surge seen in 2023, when operators were rapidly deploying 5G networks. “What is coming now is investment in network intelligence,” Vicente said. He expects operators to spend more on core network capabilities, as well as business support systems (BSS) and operations support systems (OSS).
