In the Age of Jailbroken Consoles, Xbox Says the One to Mod First Wins

Script kiddies with AI-enabled tools are busy tearing apart the idea of consoles being locked-down hardware. Xbox is now explicitly leaning in to the new era of AI-enabled game decompiles and console workarounds with its new Xbox Labs division designed to “explore new technology.” Believe it or not, Xbox has a better shot of making this work than its competitors.

The AI-enabled game modding renaissance has recently picked up steam. It started with a growing scene of modders intent on making game turduckens, like shoving Mario into Elden Ring, and it’s evolved into devs porting the original Halo: Combat Evolved onto iPhones, Android phones, and browsers, essentially letting anybody play the original game no matter what hardware they’re using. Then there’s the landmark PlayStation 5 jailbreak. Players are posting about enabling them to play their PlayStation 2 or PS3 game discs and just straight-up pirating thousands of games. Modders claimed they have managed to get games from other consoles running on PS5 through emulation.

It’s no accident that modders are specifically targetting the PS5. There has been a PlayStation jailbreak scene going on for years, but these efforts became supercharged after Sony announced it planned to end production of game discs for new titles by 2028. Xbox has taken less heat on this front with initiatives like its disc-to-digital program . The company is essentially letting players create digital licenses from their Xbox One and Xbox Series physical titles.
