In my last face-off, I drilled down into all the differences between the iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro Max. There wasn’t a huge difference across the two-year gap separating them — but now I’m going further by taking the iPhone 15 Pro Max for a spin.
As I’ve said numerous times before, three years is the bare minimum you should wait before thinking about upgrading to a new phone. That’s exactly what I’m tackling in this iPhone 18 Pro Max vs. iPhone 15 Pro Max face-off, where the differences on paper are much more substantial.
But looking at specs doesn't give a clear-cut indication of how much of a difference three years actually makes. That's why I’m going to show you whether there’s enough of a generational leap to justify making the switch.
48MP main with variable aperture (f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, f/4), 48MP ultrawide (f/2.2), 48MP telephoto w/4x optical zoom (f/2.8)
48MP main (f/1.78), 12MP ultrawide (f/2.2), 12MP telephoto w/5x optical zoom (f/2.8)
6.43 x 3.07 x 0.34 inches (163.4 x 78.0 x 8.75 mm)
6.29 x 3.02 x 0.32 inches (159.9 x 76.7 x 8.25 mm)
Just as before, camera performance is tops on my list because it’s the feature I rely on most. The iPhone 18 Pro Max clearly benefits from having the latest hardware — a 48MP triple-camera system complete with a mechanical variable aperture on the main lens. 48 aperture that inherently allows more light to hit the sensor, as well as the wider field of view from its 18MP Center Stage front camera.
