Why the battery in your AirTag might die quickly, and what you can do to make it last longer.
Apple's AirTag is a must-have accessory for travelers or anyone who's forgetful, and one of the best parts about using AirTags is that you don't have to worry about recharging them. That's because the tracker runs on a standard coin-cell battery, which Apple says lasts for more than a year before you need to replace it. But in practice, you might find that your AirTags run out of battery much faster — it really depends on how you use them.
Even with the the second-generation AirTag, which released earlier this year, the battery performance remains the same. The good news is that a few simple habits can help its battery last longer. Whether you're setting up an AirTag for the first time or having trouble with an older one, here's what to know about an AirTag's battery life.
Every AirTag uses a CR2032 coin cell battery — a 3V lithium battery commonly used in car key fobs and watches. They're super easy to find, with plenty available on Amazon and likely at your nearest drugstore or supermarket. Plus, they're quite cheap, usually costing no more than $1 each.
When you buy a new AirTag, it comes with a battery already installed. Replacing the AirTag battery is very simple : just press and twist the AirTag's steel underside cover until it comes off. Remove the old battery and insert the new one with the positive side facing up, then put the steel cover back on and twist it to close.
