In a nutshell: While there are plenty of free and paid-for cloud backup services for your phone's media, an option to automatically back up photos and videos to a PC with ease would be a welcome one. Now, Google has revealed its version of a tool that performs this function for Android users.
The addition appears in Google's November system services release notes, under Google Play services version 26.43, dated November 2. The company confirms that Quick Share is gaining automatic photo and video backups from Android to Windows.
Quick Share already lets users wirelessly move files between Android devices and Windows PCs. Automating the process should make it more useful for anyone who wants a local copy of their camera roll without remembering to transfer everything manually.
The setup is expected to involve using the Quick Share Windows app, a nearby Android phone, and the same Google account signed in on both devices. Google still hasn't published detailed instructions, so we don't know the exact process just yet.
Reports also point to a shared Wi-Fi network, daily camera roll backups, and a "Back up now" option for starting transfers manually. The feature will likely appeal to those who don't want to rely on cloud backups or have eaten through Google's 15GB of free storage, which is shared across Photos, Gmail, and Drive.
Samsung owners might not get the feature when it first rolls out. Android Authority's earlier examinations of unreleased app code suggested that Samsung phones would be excluded, with a later discovery pointing to Samsung PCs being left out, too.
