According to social media, this week’s midterms are ushering in a new era: Woke 3.0.
For the uninitiated, the internet has broken down the dynamics of American politics in the 2020s into a few distinct eras. There was Woke 1.0 at the start of the decade, associated with far-left social movements of the time. As the country leaned toward conservatism in the mid-2020s, online denizens argued that Democrats responded by moving into Woke 2.0, a shift that New York City Councilman Chi Ossé defined as “more productive” and less focused on virtue signaling than Woke 1.0.
Now, after the blue tsunami, social media is convinced that a third iteration of Woke might just be upon us. The newfound Democratic majorities in both chambers of Congress have social media anticipating a big cultural swing back to the left, and it’s got plenty of ideas of what that might look like.
As soon as Democrats started pulling away with the midterms, concepts for America under Woke 3.0 started going viral.
That includes everything from a rejection of AI (“Under Woke 3.0, you will be publicly executed for creating an AI poster for your burger restaurant,” one user wrote) to a celebration of trans athletes (“Woke 3, we’re having trans athletes swim in the Reflecting Pool,” another user quipped).
“WOKE 3 IS HERE,” a third user declared. “EVERYONE JUST GOT ANOTHER SET OF PRONOUNS, YOU ARE NOW LEGALLY REQUIRED TO THEY/THEM YOUR DOG.”
0 posters is an account known as Bald Ann Dowd, who imagined the blue wave bringing everything from universal healthcare “for diseases we don’t even have” to Ramadan-themed Hallmark movies .
