Commerce technology company Shopify is preparing to bring its accelerated checkout product, Shop Pay, to India by the first quarter of 2027, sources told Inc42.
The company is in talks with payment orchestration platforms to integrate payment service providers, the sources added.
Shopify provides software that helps businesses build and run online stores, manage inventory and orders, and integrate payments and other services. A plethora of Indian D2C brands use its platform to run their online businesses.
These existing merchant relationships would give Shop Pay a route into India’s D2C checkout market, where startups such as GoKwik, Shopflo, Razorpay, and Shiprocket help brands improve purchase conversion and manage checkout.
Shopify has not publicly confirmed the proposed launch timeline. Questions sent to the company remained unanswered till the time of publication.
Shop Pay allows customers to save their payment, shipping, and contact information to complete purchases faster across participating stores. Shopify claims the product can deliver up to 50% higher conversion than guest checkout.
Shopify already offers its native Shopify Checkout. Shop Pay adds an optional accelerated checkout experience using saved customer information. The product sits within Shopify’s broader commerce ecosystem, which includes storefront technology, merchant tools, and its consumer-facing Shop platform.
Whether Shop Pay replaces any of those services will depend on its India-specific features, payment support, and overall cost.
India’s checkout market includes Shiprocket’s Fastrr Checkout, Razorpay’s Magic Checkout, Cashfree Payments, GoKwik, and Shopflo, among others.
Shop Pay’s entry would bring these providers into closer competition with the platform on which some of their merchant customers already operate.
