Reliance Jio Platforms is looking beyond telecommunications as it builds capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing and enterprise technology. With more than 533 million customers, a substantial share of India's wireless data traffic and a growing portfolio of proprietary technologies, the company is seeking to turn its domestic scale into an opportunity in global technology markets.
The strategy draws a comparison with South Korea's SK Hynix, whose memory chips are central to the country's technology exports. Jio's potential role is different: it lies in the digital infrastructure that supports connectivity, cloud computing and AI applications.
But building a large telecommunications business and becoming a global technology player are two different challenges. Jio's investments show how it is preparing for that transition. The bigger question is whether it can turn its technology capabilities into offerings that find success beyond India.
Jio handles around 60% of India's total wireless data traffic and has more than 533 million customers, including over 284 million active 5G subscribers. This network provides the company with a substantial base for developing and deploying technology at scale.
Its strategy now extends beyond connecting users. Jio is developing the systems that run its networks, alongside platforms and services aimed at businesses. This gives it the opportunity to build technology across several layers, from connectivity to computing and enterprise applications.
Jio has more than 12,400 dedicated technology employees and has filed 7,220 patent applications across Indian and international markets. Its research and intellectual property cover 4G and 5G networks, foundational 6G research, AI-driven automation and cloud-native architectures.
