'Black October': Tech optimist warns that AI risks are no longer a future concern after cyberattacks

A tech enthusiast who has always been optimistic about artificial intelligence (AI) has raised concerns about its growing risks after a series of cyberattacks. In a post titled "Black October", he said the past 18 hours had changed how he looked at AI and warned that its risks were no longer just a future concern.

"For anyone who knows me even somewhat well, it's clear that I am a 99th percentile tech optimist," he wrote. However, he said recent developments had made him worried about how quickly AI was advancing and how it could be misused.

The author said several dozen cyberattacks had taken place over the past two days. He claimed that these attacks had affected several sectors, including government, education, technology and banking. He believes October 2026 could become an important month in the history of technology.

The author said AI models had become highly capable of writing code and solving complex programming problems. They can perform many tasks that would normally require skilled programmers. They can also work around the clock, unlike humans.

He explained that thousands of AI agents could be set up to work on a task at the same time. "In a nutshell, what's happened is that frontier AI models have gotten to a point where they are as advanced as the most sophisticated programmers," he wrote.

"They can work 24/7, and you can spin up 10,000 of them with a single command and they'll work together tirelessly until they accomplish their task," the author wrote.
