Apple names Rajesh Ambati among three new VPs as John Ternus reshapes hardware team: Report

Apple has appointed three new vice presidents in engineering, including Rajesh Ambati, as chief executive officer John Ternus reorganises teams, reduces management layers and reviews the company’s long-standing operating practices.

According to Bloomberg, Ambati, Louie Sanui netti and Derek Shaeffer work on software or hardware that enables Apple devices to connect to the internet. The appointments are part of the company’s regular promotion cycle.

The changes come as Ternus pushes for more frequent product launches and a leaner organisational structure, following earlier reports about his plans to streamline departments and improve communication.

Apple’s hardware division has undergone a round of layoffs, with Ternus seeking to eliminate some programme manager positions to simplify communication, Gurman reported.

The company is also implementing a multiyear transition involving two senior display executives, Wei Chen and John Xhing. Both are moving into smaller, advisory-like roles after roughly three decades at Apple, ahead of their eventual retirements, according to the report.

The changes indicate a broader effort to restructure teams and management responsibilities under Ternus.

Apple has also considered wider workforce reductions, including potential layoffs affecting 5,000 support employees, as part of its cost and organisational streamlining efforts.

According to Gurman, the company believes artificial intelligence-powered phone and web agents could take over some responsibilities currently handled by support staff.

These virtual assistants can answer customer questions, provide step-by-step troubleshooting instructions for Apple products and transfer users to human advisers when they cannot resolve an issue.

Apple may pursue further layoffs or slow hiring for AppleCare roles as it assesses how AI tools could change its customer support operations.
