Rumor mill: The latest rumors and announcements have assembled a tentative roadmap for AMD's mobile hardware lineup over the next few years. Recent reports suggest that Sony's rumored handheld game system will have exclusive access to AMD's highly anticipated RDNA 5 architecture for some time. It might not appear in off-the-shelf form factors until 2029, by which time Zen 7 will likely be ready.
Prominent leaker Kepler_L2 recently claimed that AMD APUs featuring "RDNA 5+" iGPUs and Zen 7 CPU cores will be available in early 2029. The statement amounts to some of the earliest concrete information about Zen 7 chips for consumer devices.
Earlier reports from Kepler and Digital Foundry indicate that a leaked handheld SoC from Sony, codenamed Canis, is currently the only mobile product in development to feature AMD's next GPU architecture, RDNA 5. Kepler claimed that AMD won't offer RDNA 5 to PC manufacturers like Valve, ASUS, or MSI because they couldn't guarantee shipments of at least 10 million units, AMD's minimum threshold. The leaker has since defended the claim, sparking speculation about when RDNA 5 might become available to OEM handhelds and other devices.
In response, Kepler stated RDNA 5+ will come to APUs in 2029 along with "Grimlock," the codename for AMD's Zen 7 CPU architecture. Adding a plus symbol to RDNA 5 indicates that the APUs will feature enhancements following the architecture's initial launch. OEM handhelds released between now and then, potentially including one from Microsoft, will likely use AMD's upcoming Ryzen Z3 series, which combines Zen 6, Zen 5, and RDNA 4m.
