AI shopping with Grok: Musk's credit card-sharing idea sparks privacy debate

Using an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot to shop online could involve more than comparing prices and selecting products. Elon Musk's suggestion to use Grok for purchases by uploading a photograph of a credit card has triggered questions about the safety of sharing sensitive payment information with AI tools, with users raising concerns on social media.

In a post on X, Musk said users could upload a picture of their credit card to a chat with Grok Bot, which would search the internet for the best deal on a product and place an order.

To buy stuff, you can just take a picture of your credit card, drop it in the chat and Grok @Bot will scour the Internet for the best deal on the item you want and order it

The suggestion points to a possible use of AI agents in online shopping, where a chatbot moves beyond recommending products to completing transactions.

However, it also raises questions about how payment details shared with such systems are processed, stored and protected.

The post drew reactions from users concerned about the risks of sharing credit card information with an AI chatbot. Some questioned whether uploading a photograph of a card was a safe way to enable AI-led purchases, while others suggested alternatives such as virtual or single-use card numbers to limit exposure of primary card details.

A context note attached to Musk's post also highlighted concerns about sharing personal information with AI systems and referred to data-handling and access risks.
