YouTube is trying out a policy that makes it easier for creators to claim the AdSense revenue their videos generate. In the United States, India, and Indonesia, some members of the YouTube Partner Program now have the ability to cash out their AdSense accounts after earning just $20. Previously, $100 was the minimum threshold for those payouts.
According to the YouTube Help page that tracks ongoing experiments on the platform, the lowered threshold is going into effect “starting from October 2026 payments for a randomly selected group of creators” across the three aforementioned countries. Those creators can control their payout threshold through their AdSense accounts. Partner Program members can already use that page to raise the minimum payout amount, if they so choose.
For the typical American creator, the difference between $20 and $100 only amounts to a grocery run or two. If you want to know why YouTube is running this test, the other regions involved in the experiment provide a partial answer. The Indian rupee and Indonesian rupiah are weak compared to the U.S. dollar. For both of those currencies, the current USD exchange rate is greater than 18,000 to 1.
Therefore, for Indian and Indonesian creators — especially those in the poorer, rural communities where YouTube is an emerging career path — an $80 difference is a big deal. Smaller thresholds will help YouTube close the payout gap that separates the U.S. from India.
Even American creators, however, can benefit from the lowered thresholds. YouTube caused a stir earlier this year when it announced that the entry requirements for the Partner Program will become more strict .
