The update would allow labels to be shown more prominently when viewers are engaged but move the tags to video comments otherwise.
YouTube announced an update to the product tag displays in its shopping affiliate program videos. The platform is introducing dynamic tags that will adjust the visibility of some tagged products based on how viewers interact with them.
YouTube’s shopping affiliate program enables eligible creators to tag products that are featured in their video clips, with the creator earning a commission from any sales stemming from those links.
As shown in this image, at present, shopping tags are displayed behind a “view products” icon on the video clip, but YouTube is now testing two new variations of how these labels are displayed:
Essentially, YouTube wants to reduce disruption for users who aren’t interested in the products displayed by using a predictive method to vary the in-stream tag displays.
YouTube said the update will only change where the tagged products are displayed and will have no impact on a video’s reach, discovery or recommendations.
YouTube has been working to expand its shopping affiliate program to provide more ways for creators to make money from their content, while also encouraging more shopping behavior in-stream.
Last month, YouTube expanded access to the program to creators in the U.K. In addition, the company also announced a significant expansion of the products available for display through a new partnership with Amazon.
