Spending More on Marketing, But Getting Fewer Customers? Here’s What You’re Overlooking.

Before increasing your budget, discover five critical areas to examine so you can stop wasting marketing dollars and turn existing demand into profitable growth.

There is a conversation I have had many times with business owners. “We need more leads,” they tell me. My next question is usually, “What happened to the leads you already had?”

That question can be uncomfortable. It also tends to be more useful than another report about impressions and website visits.

A business can invest heavily in advertising, content, search visibility and social media without making more money. Sometimes the audience is wrong. Sometimes the promise is unclear. Sometimes the prospective customer is ready to buy, but the business makes it too difficult.

Before increasing your marketing budget, trace what happens between the first sign of interest and actual revenue.

More website visitors do not automatically mean more qualified demand. A company may rank for broad educational searches while missing the highly specific searches people make before purchasing.

Start with your best customers. What triggered their search? What problem had become urgent? What words did they use to describe the need? Which alternatives did they compare?

Then compare those patterns with your campaign targeting and website content. A local service business may need fewer broad impressions and more visibility for high-intent location searches. A B2B company may need to address a buying committee with different questions about cost, implementation and risk.

Measure lead quality by source, not just lead quantity. Ten opportunities that fit your ideal customer profile may be worth more than a thousand clicks that never move toward a purchase.
