The artificial intelligence agent will be able to make purchases for users on all Shopify stores but won’t have access to Amazon products or retailers.
Meta announced a partnership with Shopify that will enable users of its new Muse AI agents to empower their Muse bots to make purchases from Shopify merchants on their behalf.
At the same time, Amazon blocked Meta’s Muse bots from its service, reflecting broader industry uncertainty about the potential impact of such tools on the online ecosystem.
First, on Shopify, the platform’s CEO Tobi Lutke announced on X that Shopify will partner with Muse “to enable agentic checkout with Shop Pay on all Shopify stores, offering people an easy and delightful way to shop and check out with Muse.”
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a separate X post that the partnership with Shopify will make discovery and checkout easier in Muse, powering a new stage of shopping via artificial intelligence-powered agents.
The deal will enable Muse agents to search Shopify, find relevant products and even negotiate prices on behalf of users, and could have a significant impact on overall shopping behavior, depending on Muse take-up.
As reported by Retail Dive, Amazon asked to be removed from Meta’s Muse agent list, due to Amazon’s rules against automated shopping tools.
A key factor in Amazon's decision could be upselling, and the expanded opportunities for sales that the platform derives from having actual users visit its site. If people are no longer viewing product listings on Amazon directly, that could lead to fewer sales, and less exposure for promoted products.
