Creator horror is everywhere this October, but Curry Barker is reminding us that YouTube still matters

For horror creators on YouTube, a lot has changed between last October and the present. Creators have become hot commodities in Hollywood, and that trend has been focused almost exclusively on the horror genre. Kane Parsons‘ Backrooms and Curry Barker‘s Obsession were two of the biggest sleeper hits of Hollywood’s summer season, and Markiplier brought his project Iron Lung to theaters as well.

If the momentum those creators generated is going to be sustained into 2027, then spooky season is a crucial time of year. Horror movies can be big draws during the fall, but at least one of the horror maestros who broke out this year is returning to his roots. Barker dusted off his YouTube channel to premiere Mama Bear, a chilling short film that arrives two days before Halloween.

Though Barker is rewarding his YouTube subscribers, both the multiplexes and the halls of Hollywood studios are currently filled with horror creators. One of the scary movies opening this week is Breeder, which is directed by Alex Goyette. On YouTube, Goyette is also known as JouleThief.

Funnily enough, Goyette’s previous directorial credit is about as far from a horror flick as you can get. He went behind the camera for the 2014 project Expelled, which was a star vehicle for the Vine heartthrob Cameron Dallas.

In other cases, studios are setting their sights on creators who have produced genre fare on platforms like YouTube. The latest deal of that nature unites Blumhouse ‘s Atomic Monster with horror queen Heidi Wong , who will use the partnership to write and develop short films .
