Zelda Fans Are Being Personally Victimized By Ocarina Of Time Remake’s Jump Button

There once was a time when Link, the Hero of Time who has saved Hyrule repeatedly across his reincarnated lives, could instinctually jump. You as the player just had to run him to the edge of a platform and he would simply just leap to the next. The Ocarina of Time remake, which pretties up the N64 classic for the Switch 2, also adds a manual jump button so players can freely hop from one place to the next. That sounds good in theory, but if you’re someone who has played the original Ocarina of Time enough to be able to move through it blindfolded, this change might have you faceplanting to the depths below in the game’s early hours.

I haven’t played Ocarina of Time in, god, well over a decade at this point. I never even got around to playing the 3DS remake in 2011. So it’s been a minute since I went running through the open fields of Hyrule, but I still instinctively feel like Link should jump when he steps off a ledge. Well, he doesn’t, not this time. More than once now, I’ve tried to jump to safety, only for Link to practically pencil-dive into the chasm below. I haven’t had any deathly falls yet, as water or a reasonably close floor usually awaits when I fuck this up. But who knows what dangers await me as my journey through Hyrule continues?

Thankfully, I’m not the only one being misled by decades of muscle memory, and it’s at least nice to have something silly to bond over this early on into the game.
