Xbox Issues New Official Statement on Future Gears of War Games

Although Emergence has just begun with the recent release of Gears of War: E-Day, Xbox game studio The Coalition is already talking about the future. That's not necessarily uncommon in game development, but the wider issue here is that the comments follow fear of new layoffs at The Coalition. Gears of War: E-Day story director Juan Vaca's layoff just days after announcing it had gone gold, highlighting how tumultuous everything at Xbox is.

The Coalition (including Vaca) has spent years building toward Gears of War: E-Day, making its development one of the longer waits in the franchise's history. The game serves as a prequel to the original Gears of War, allowing The Coalition to revisit the early days of Marcus Fenix and the Locust invasion while using modern technology to push the series forward. With E-Day now providing a new foundation for the franchise, attention is already turning toward what Xbox and The Coalition could do next.

Gears of War: E-Day features an action-packed co-op campaign, intense PvP multiplayer, and an endlessly replayable Horde Siege mode.

That future was directly addressed by The Coalition studio head Mike Crump, in a statement to the BBC , who says Gears of War: E-Day will provide a "great foundation" for future games in the series. Pointedly, Crump also says "the next game will not take nearly as long" to make. The comment is one of the clearest indications yet that Xbox and The Coalition are thinking beyond E-Day and already see a future for Gears of War games that can move at a faster pace, although that's likely due to considerable up-top pressure.
