The PlayStation 5’s Operating System Can Now Be Emulated On PC

The PlayStation 5’s operating system can now be emulated on PC, which is a massive milestone in the PlayStation 5’s emulation scene—at least, as far as the progress on natively booting PS5 games on PCs is concerned.

A bit of context before we go further: this has reportedly been semi-possible for a few months now. According to the team behind the RPCSX emulator, “booting VSH on PS4 and PS5 firmware” has been feasible since early 2026. However, there’s a pretty sizable difference between an emulated version of the PS5’s OS “booting” and, as user VinasExplosao has recently shown off in a post on X, having video evidence of it actually running.

Now, there is an important distinction to be made here: the PlayStation 5’s operating system hasn’t been ported to PC at the kernel level. From what I understand, what you’re seeing here is closer to emulation than the PlayStation OS running natively on PC.

Essentially, the video showcases the PS5’s VSH (Sony’s internal codename for the PS5’s menu) running on PC. To put that in simpler terms, it’s like the PS5’s menus are being emulated, sort of in the same way that you would emulate a game.

That means that this isn’t as big of a deal as some are making it out to be, as getting the PS5’s operating system running natively on PC would bring us a lot closer to running PS5 games natively on PC.
