I feel fairly comfortable calling FromSoftware my favorite video game developer, full stop. After all, the Japanese company has been on an industry-defining tear for the better part of two decades now, starting with the release of the seminal Demon's Souls in 2009.
Through Demon's Souls, and later Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring, FromSoftware has established itself as the premier developer for difficult, narratively dense, bizarre third-person action RPGs. The studio essentially invented a new genre—the now-ubiquitous "soulslike"—but no imitators have been able to top the originals. Indeed, FromSoft's post-Demon's Souls output has been defined by the pursuit of perfection along various design vectors, and some titles have come closer to achieving that perfection than others.
The following list shouldn't necessarily be read as "worst to best," but rather "most perfect" to "least perfect," designations defined by quality consistency, amount of filler, campaign low points, and so forth. But basically every FromSoft game is worth more than the sum of its parts.
Dark Souls fans don't like Dark Souls 2. Its status as the black sheep of its franchise could come down to the fact that then-blossoming game director Hidetaka Miyazaki, who directed both Demon's Souls and Dark Souls, took a back seat on this project, only serving as a supervisor. It certainly doesn't "feel" like Dark Souls much of the time, and that could be the result of Miyazaki's relative lack of involvement.
