Tesla Optimus Production Hits Hundreds Weekly, Hands Remain Challenge

Tesla has reportedly increased production of its Optimus humanoid robot roughly tenfold in recent months, reaching several hundred units per week. However, the company still faces challenges with the robot’s complex hands, automated manufacturing equipment, and supplier availability as it works toward producing more than 1,000 Optimus robots per week by the end of 2026.

According to a report by The Information, Tesla’s Optimus production has increased from several dozen robots per week during the second quarter of 2026 to several hundred units per week recently. The rise marks roughly a tenfold increase in output in recent months.

However, production has not yet reached a stable and reliable level at the scale Tesla is targeting. The company is reportedly working towards a production line capable of making more than 1,000 Optimus robots every week by the end of this year.

Tesla has much larger ambitions for the humanoid robot. Elon Musk has previously discussed a potential manufacturing rate of around 20,000 robots per week. Tesla has also outlined plans for Optimus Gen 3 to become its first robot design intended for mass production.

The robot’s hands are among the biggest hurdles in Tesla’s production ramp-up. Optimus needs to perform precise, human-like movements, requiring numerous compact motors, actuators, sensors, and mechanical components to work together.

According to the report, Tesla is facing difficulties not only with hand manufacturing and assembly but also with automated production equipment and suppliers. The company has continued refining the hand design as it works towards a production-ready version.
