Starfield is unlikely to get a sequel, according to one of its lead developers.
Speaking with FRVR, former lead systems designer at Bethesda, Kurt Kuhlmann, says he would be "very surprised" if Starfield got a sequel. He cites apparent poor sales as the reason for this, saying that Bethesda's first new IP in years didn't sell enough to warrant greenlighting a sequel.
"I don’t think Starfield was anywhere near successful enough to do a Starfield 2," Kuhlmann says. “It’s, in a way, too bad, because I think with the lessons learned on Starfield, a Starfield 2 could have been much closer to the game that Todd [Howard] had [in mind]."
While he doesn't rule it out entirely, he makes it clear he is not expecting Starfield 2 to be on the agenda. He also admits that Starifield has its faults - highlighting the issues with how base building is implemented into the game, as an example - but felt that this could have been refined in a sequel.
Indeed, it wasn't too long ago that game series like Starfield were able to find their feet. Go back even further, and you can see this with Bethesda's own series, The Elder Scrolls ; I don't think there are many of us arguing that Arena was the high point of the series, even if you like the classics. Daggerfall would go on to expand on it in every way, before Morrowind gave us what many consider to be one of the best RPGs of all time.
