Sega and Creative Assembly remove Total War: Shogun 2 remaster from sale as it "falls short of both your expectations and our own standards"

Recently launched title has received overwhelmingly negative reviews on Steam, with players citing AI upscaling and performance issues

Sega and Creative Assembly have temporarily withdrawn Total War: Shogun 2 – Complete Edition from sale in response to concerns about AI upscaling and other performance issues.

Since its October 13 launch, the remaster has received overwhelmingly negative reviews on Steam. Players have reported that assets such as unit cards and new cutscenes display AI-generated features, including extra fingers and armor merging into characters' bodies.

As described on Steam, the "underlying graphics technology has been brought to modern standards to take advantage of new methods in rendering," resulting in improved graphics and textures.

In response, both companies issued a joint statement acknowledging that the game "has fallen short of both your expectations and our own standards."

"We've seen your feedback, comments, and reviews. We agree that the current experience is not where it needs to be."

"As a result we are working with platform holders to temporarily remove the game from sale and to reinstate the original game while we investigate the issues. Existing owners will still be able to access and play the game."

"We are working closely with our development partner to identify the causes of these problems, deliver improvements, and ensure Shogun 2 – Complete Edition meets the quality standards players expect from Total War."

Earlier this year, Sega faced criticism for its use of generative AI in Crazy Taxi: World Tour.

The game's Steam page included a generative AI disclaimer, which clarified that Sega uses the technology "as a support tool for developers, aiming to provide better content to our users and enable developers to focus more on creative tasks."
