Sci-Fi RPG Exodus Is About to Put Mass Effect's Romance System to a Much Harder Test

We still have a good while before Exodus arrives, but hype for the game is already starting to mount. As the debut from Archetype Entertainment, a studio featuring notable BioWare alumni, Exodus has attracted a lot of attention, and has already been viewed as something of a spiritual successor to Mass Effect, for better or worse.

I don't think that Archetype is rushing to shrug off the Mass Effect comparisons—Mass Effect is regularly hailed as one of the best RPG franchises of all time, after all. At the same time, Archetype has been clear about its intentions, and the originality of its product: Exodus aims to be an evolution of BioWare's older design philosophy, as well as a meaningfully distinct gaming experience in its own right. One way that Exodus is carrying the spirit of Mass Effect is through its romance systems, which Archetype has described as key parts of the role-playing experience. Archetype has also painted romance as a more robust and multifaceted affair (no pun intended), which will hopefully help it better gel with the game's intended mature audience.

Exodus, the upcoming Sci-Fi RPG from former BioWare developers, has just revealed its first look at combat and exploration gameplay.

Exodus lead writer and former BioWare luminary Drew Karpyshyn has spoken about Exodus' romance systems on a few occasions, but I think one of his best, in-a-nutshell descriptions of the idea comes from a September 2026 interview with IGN:

we're leaning more toward the romances being a sort of role-playing relationship thing as opposed to being tied directly to gameplay.
