Conversations are a big deal in RPGs, especially when we as players can choose what our character says. Talking to NPCs is also a great way to get information about the other characters or the story, although I have to admit that sometimes skipping a conversation here and there is tempting, especially if I find the NPC annoying.
In any case, sometimes saying the wrong thing can have massive consequences in an RPG. Well, not that a bad conversation can kill you, at least not most of the time, but it can definitely make you lose some valuable allies or even change the course of the entire story. While some RPGs warn you before you say something irreversible, not every title offers this luxury.
As you probably know, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings follows the story of Geralt of Rivia, a professional monster hunter. He becomes entangled in a conspiracy after being accused of killing King Foltest, and he is now trying to clear his name. One of the most important conversations in the game happens in Flotsam, where you must choose between supporting Vernon Roche or Iorveth.
This decision determines which faction Geralt will follow, which in turn dramatically changes the second act. Depending on what you say, you can either get involved in a political conflict surrounding King Henselt, or choose to defend Iorveth and help the rebel Scoia'tael defend Vergen. Each route gives you different information about the conspiracy, but in either case, you will have sacrificed one point of view for the other.
