Video games are a medium that literally anyone can enjoy, from ages 10 to 110, but that doesn't mean there aren't some games that are tailored towards a more mature audience. The world of role-playing games is abundant with darker, grimmer narratives, letting you step into a universe as brutal as our own, just with a couple of dragons flying around here and there.
They explore human nature, war, society, and a whole host of other mature themes, some from the natural world and others from beyond the grave. Whatever the subject, content, and setting, these games represent the peak of R-Rated role-playing, with all the grittiness and bleakness you could ever want.
Baldur’s Gate 3 has quickly become an icon in the gaming world, and it's all because of its dedication to true role-playing freedom. You start being infected by a mind flayer tadpole, a parasite that will turn you into a monster unless a cure is found. From there, the world really is your oyster, pulling you towards large conflicts alongside iconic companions who may very well become lovers.
Combat follows classic 5e rules, with action economy, high-ground bonuses, and environmental tricks that reward creativity, yet as strategic as it gets, you can never escape the gore and brutality that ensues. Later on, some incredibly graphic scenes could unsettle the soundest of stomachs, but for me, the R-rating is far from unnecessary, and serves to promote just how grim this fantasy world can really be.
