A reliable PlayStation tech insider has reported that just the memory costs alone for the PlayStation 6 are already over $680 per console.
You’d think that the ongoing worldwide memory shortage that has been plaguing the tech industry for the past year and a bit would push back the next generation of consoles, but that sadly isn’t the case. Both Sony and Microsoft have confirmed that the next PlayStation and Xbox are well into development, and aren’t likely to be delayed by much.
That just means that both the Project Helix and PlayStation 6 are going to end up costing consumers even more than they would have before. Considering the PS5 Pro already launched at $700 in a RAM-heavy 2024, it’s looked inevitable that the PS6 would be well over $1,000, something that a new report has cemented even more.
As reported by VGC, reliable tech insider KeplerL2, who has previously shared numerous reports on the PS6’s production and rising cost, commented on a NeoGAF post about the console’s specs and price. One user suggested KeplerL2 could be wrong and that a subsidised price could “easily see a PS6 launch at $680 in those circumstances”.
In response, KeplerL2, said that the PS6’s RAM and NAND alone are already costing Sony over $680 per console. Considering that’s just one element of the PS6’s manufacturing costs (albeit one of the biggest), it’s looking even likelier than ever that the next-gen console is going to be priced at well over $1,000.
