The PlayStation 2 remains a console that boasts years' worth of incredible gaming memories. It even served as many people's first introduction to video games. My first-ever console was the PlayStation 2, and I'm still grateful for it to this day. Sony kept the system in production for a whopping 13 years, which helped the PS2 secure its spot as the best-selling console of all time.

With the ability to play games and also DVDs, the PS2 was a double dose of entertainment at the time. As great as the DVD functionality was, the true star was the games roster. Longtime fans all have their own ideas of what the best PS2 games are, but a few key titles went on to define the sixth console generation, even if you never got around to playing them. Despite their "iconic" status, some of these games are lying dormant and deserve a serious comeback.

Even though this list goes over games that helped define the PS2 era, they are not necessarily exclusive to the PS2 console.

Honestly, when I was a kid, I thought Dark Cloud felt like a Legend of Zelda rip-off because of the box art character's uncanny resemblance to Link. However, that opinion changed when I finally played the game at a friend's house a few years later. Dark Cloud 's gameplay stands completely on its own. By today's standards, the controls are really clunky and outdated, but that's not exactly surprising for a game that's 25 years old.
