PlayStation will officially support game disc production after January 2028, offering slight clarification to its original announcement. To be clear, PlayStation will no longer make discs for any new PS5 games released after January 2028, but that does not mean it will no longer produce discs.
After the initial announcement, PlayStation was asked about its presence at physical retailers. Brick-and-mortar stores like GameStop were among the first hurt by the industry's shift to digital games, which was a warning sign that eventually the biggest players in the field would likely move away too. As such, it seems many retailers were concerned about the knock-on effects of PlayStation's exit from the market.
Some users can lock in a new PS5 console at a comparatively cheap price with a pre-order.
Sony is reportedly reassuring publishers and retailers that physical PlayStation games will still be sold in stores after January 2028, despite the company's decision to stop producing disc editions of new releases. According to Game File, Sony will continue accepting orders for existing physical games released before January 2028, alongside new non-disc products. In other words, it's not that any new PlayStation game or PlayStation exclusive released in 2027 has a more limited shelf life for now. It stands to reason that someday there may not be a reason to continue support for re-orders or non-disc products if the shift toward digital continues.

Importantly, PlayStation games released before January 2028 will not be affected by the new policy, and retailers will still be able to order additional copies of those existing disc releases after the deadline.
