Patrick Stewart, Star Trek and Shakespeare legend, has died

Patrick Stewart, the classically-trained actor who gained worldwide fame in the 1980s as Captain Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation and later as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men film series, has died. A message posted on Stewart's official X account said his passing came "following a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer's Disease and Lewy Body Dementia."

Stewart joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966, and took his first television role a year later on the long-running British series Coronation Street. He debuted on Broadway in 1971, and subsequently appeared in several feature films. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2010, becoming Sir Patrick, which he described as "an unlooked-for honour."

But it was his tenure as Captain Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation that propelled him to international fame. Where his predecessor, Captain James T. Kirk, was a notorious ladies' man of action and fisticuffs, Picard brought a decidedly more intellectual and thoughtful bent to the big chair that ultimately proved one of the show's most enduring characteristics.

Once or twice, the show even allowed him to stretch his Shakespearean legs:

At the same time, there was never any question that Picard could kick whatever ass was necessary whenever it was called for, and he carried that demeanor over to his portrayal of Professor X: A kind, patient father figure of immeasurable power, whose leadership was paramount despite his gentle nature.
