One Piece Creator Oda Officially Changes Devil Fruits Forever

Devil Fruits were established by Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, in the very first chapter of the series on July 18, 1997, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue 34. This power system has since expanded its roots and formed the basis of most of the abilities that exist in this brilliant world.

Up until recently, Devil Fruits were still the most popular power system in the world of One Piece. Despite Oda introducing Haki midway through the series and explaining it to us properly in Chapter 597, Devil Fruits still maintained their superiority as the most exciting and efficient power in the entire series. Now, however, Devil Fruits' hegemony over the One Piece power system has been changed forever with the introduction of a new ability known as Maki, wielded solely by Nerona Imu and his most trusted World Government officials, such as the Five Elders and the Holy Knights. Maki has completely switched the dynamics and is looking to be the new strongest power in the world of One Piece, removing Devil Fruits from the top for the very first time.

Up until recently, One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda emphasized repeatedly that the Devil Fruit formed the primary power system of the One Piece world. Even though Haki technically counters even the effects of Devil Fruits, these powers still held more importance. At the end of the day, the vast majority of the powerful characters on the seas all wielded powerful fruits, and this can be seen among the ranks of the Marines, the Yonko, and even the Revolutionary Army.
