Nintendo has never really been a stranger to retooling its older, more popular games and putting them on modern platforms. However, this year, starting with Star Fox, it feels like the definition of what a remake is has changed at Nintendo, and according to a senior vice president at the studio, those remakes are going to be at Nintendo’s core alongside its new releases moving forward.
In an interview with Polygon, Nintendo’s SVP of product development and publishing Nate Bihldorff detailed just how important remakes are to the studio in the present day. “I do think that new games and remakes both have a place in the Nintendo stable, of equal importance, to be honest,” Bihldorff said, so we can almost certainly expect to see more of them moving forward.
“There’s also a deep satisfaction in revisiting games that were very, very special, like Ocarina of Time... But it’s also important to think about how many people had never played the original, and for them, the remake of Ocarina of Time is going to be an absolutely brand-new, 2026 experience,” Bihldorff continued. Ocarina’s remake was released yesterday, five months after a Star Fox remaster with a similar scope launched exclusively on Switch 2.
We finally got a chance to play The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake and it's still one of the best games ever made.
It’s those two games that have seemingly kickstarted a new remake era for Nintendo. Nintendo has pulled games from its past and put remasters and remakes of them on newer consoles before.
