Nobody expects a 40-year-old NES game to stand the test of time. That is simply too much of an ask for a project released during the gaming industry's fledgling days, and 8-bit games show their age way more than their 16-bit counterparts. Still, as rare as they might be, a few classic NES titles actually defeated Father Time and managed to become effectively timeless. You can introduce these games to a modern player, and they will have an absolute blast without any issues.
Now, I want to clarify that I don't think a NES game needs to have aged well to still warrant praise. Plenty of masterpieces are horrible to play nowadays, but that doesn't take away what they accomplished during their heyday. Nevertheless, it feels extra special when you find an old-school release that still plays like an absolute dream.
Well, this one is cheating, but Tetris on the NES is still a 100% perfect game. The Game Boy version tends to attract most of the retrospective accolades due to its importance to that console's success, but the NES iteration is the better of the two to play nowadays. The gameplay is just pure Tetris, and the only setup is picking a level that determines how quickly the blocks fall.
Look, there's nothing that I really need to say here. It's Tetris . Regardless of somebody's age or experience, they will instantly grasp the mechanics, almost like we are all born with the ability to play the game.
