Some games never go out of style, but only a select few. Putting aside heavyweights like Halo and Far Cry, single-player FPS games have a short window of relevance: they must become enduring classics or accept their fate as forgotten treasures destined to show up in these articles. Without an active multiplayer component, reasons to return to a shooter fade with each passing day, until a whole month goes by without a single play session.
Personally, I love old-school FPS games, particularly ones from the 2000s; however, not everyone plans their gaming schedule around titles they played or wished they'd played as teenagers. For one reason or another, these FANTASTIC single-player games are almost certainly seeing no action nowadays, and that's a darn shame.
Obviously, it's impossible to 100% know for certain that literally nobody is playing these games, but the number certainly cannot be in the three digits.
I wanted to kick things off with Clive Barker's Undying for a couple of reasons. First, excellent horror shooters are in short supply, so we should cherish the exceptions. Second, it's readily available on GOG for $5.99 and goes on sale for much less. Finally, Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival just came out, which might tempt folks to check out the creator's older games.
While I wouldn't go out of my way to play Clive Barker's Jericho , Undying is another story entirely, and its value goes beyond nostalgia or historical significance. Natural aging aside, this game holds up about as well as any janky early-2000s horror shooter , thanks to its gothic vibes, creepy atmosphere, and combat that lets you dual-wield magic and guns.
