Let’s just get right into it. This ranking lists some of the most well-known, most played, and most beloved single-player open-world RPGs available, period. Each one has an expanded or enhanced edition that helped push it from one of the best games in the genre at launch into the pantheon of all-time greats, with expansions, updates, extra features, and everything in between.
Just a few things need clarification first. It’s almost 2027, so to keep the “most perfect of all time” aspect relevant, I’ll focus mostly on modern open-world RPGs, or at least ones supported for years, gradually eliminating their early shortcomings and making them especially easy to recommend today. As such, I excluded older games like Fallout: New Vegas with no modern official support or updates, as well as similar titles that notably show their age despite their rich RPG freedom and possibilities.
The games below are ranked based not on their biggest strengths, but on how consistently they deliver a good time and how few missteps or annoyances there are throughout. Still, like any other list of this kind, it’s a subjective ranking that might not align with your own views.
One of the modern open-world RPG kings of variety, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth sustains its quality through a lengthy campaign that can take you a hundred hours to complete, keeping you pleasantly surprised at every turn. Excellent turn-based combat with unique vacation-themed professions, rich character relationships, and unusually substantial activities that feed into progression — it’s a game that’s easy to enjoy regardless of your preferences.
