While it's hard to doubt the effectiveness and popularity of Magic: The Gathering's Commander decks, there has definitely been a notable influx of them over the past year. Between set-themed decks, Secret Lair decks, and the Foundations releases, there are due to be at least 25 unique decks in 2026, with one more deck, a Spider-Man one, rumored to be dropping this December.
Well, precon production isn't slowing down any time soon, as Mark Rosewater has confirmed we'll get at least 24 new decks in 2027, since each new set will launch with at least four new Commander precons. This is great news for the format, which will undoubtedly benefit from the influx of reprints and new-to-Magic cards, but will every deck meet the quality and competitiveness we've come to expect from 2026's very strong lineup?
Over on his Tumblr, where he is known for heavily engaging with the Magic fandom, lead designer Mark Rosewater confirmed that there will be at least four new Commander precons for each of the six sets coming in 2027. That puts the total number at a bare minimum of 24 new decks.
In the seven sets released in 2026, 17 new decks were released, but there was no deck for The Hobbit, only one for TMNT and Reality Fracture, and two for Lorwyn Eclipsed. Only three sets hit at least four precons in 2026: Secrets of Strixhaven (five), Marvel Super Heroes (four), and Star Trek (four).
Commander precons faced shipping delays and short supply on at least two occasions in 2026 (Marvel & Foundations).
