As Amazon MGM is finding out the hard way, it's going to be tough to follow up Daniel Craig as James Bond. The Knives Out star embodied the legendary character for longer than any other actor before him, wielding 007's license to kill for 15 years, from 2006's Casino Royale to 2021's No Time to Die. What's more, it certainly doesn't help that Craig's incarnation of the MI6 spy went out in the most explosive way possible, one that Bond fans have been debating ever since.
Having survived numerous bouts with Blofeld, a hundred high-speed car chases, and a laser between the legs, James Bond finally met his fiery demise in No Time to Die, marking the first time the character had ever been killed off in any medium. Even creator Ian Fleming never had the hero meet his end in the original novels. Some have criticized the move as a hasty way to write out Craig's 007, but in actual fact, this could not be further from the truth. Rate it or hate it, the death of Daniel Craig's James Bond was actually the culmination of a very long game. One cooked up by the man himself.
The next James Bond movie should look into a former 007 to provide a fresh take on the iconic spy.
It's usually the Bond villains who are the ones coming up with masterplans to kill 007, but in this case, Daniel Craig was responsible for succeeding where none of the spy's foes have succeeded before.
