In an age where physical game releases seem like a trend that's on its way out, Nintendo has remained committed to offering players both physical and digital options. While Nintendo Switch 2 games are still getting physical releases for the time being, a shift in industry production priorities is on the horizon.
The debate over physical versus digital games has become a hot topic in the gaming community ever since Sony announced the end of physical PlayStation game production starting in 2028. Adding fuel to the fire was the announcement that GTA 6 wouldn't release with a physical disc either, with retailers only selling a code in a box for the game. Nintendo has mostly sidestepped this controversy so far, but the recent announcement from a major Switch 2 cartridge manufacturer may force the company to reevaluate its physical releases.
Switch 2 users looking to add more system storage and save money are in luck, as some retailers reveal tempting offers to kick off November.
As reported by MST Financial’s Senior Analyst David Gibson on Twitter, Nintendo's largest supplier of Switch and Switch 2 game cartridges has officially announced that it will no longer produce the ROM chips used for Switch 2 cartridges. Macronix has been the primary manufacturer for Switch 2 cartridges , but is now exiting the ROM manufacturing industry after ROM fell to just 5% of the company's Q3 sales, down from 26% the previous year.
