Qualcomm’s next-gen chipset announcement is rather different this year, not least because we have not one but two high-end processors launching simultaneously. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 aren’t just word salads; there are meaningful differences between the regular and Extreme versions.

Let’s start with what’s the same. Both the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Extreme boast the same impressive 5GHz headline CPU clock speed. Based on the limited information Qualcomm has shared about its latest Oryon CPU revision, these appear to be the same cores across both models, with many similarities to last year’s architecture, too, including SME1 (but not SME2) support.

The two chips also boast the same Qualcomm X105 5G Modem and FastConnect 8800 capabilities for blazing-fast 5G and Wi-Fi networking, as well as Snapdragon Sound audio. Intelligent Pixel Control and Elite Color Engine remain locked in for photography, ensuring that your snaps look pristine regardless of which platform ends up in your next smartphone.

On the AI front, both sport a new Hexagon Element Accelerator that supports Fast Action Loops and longer 32K context lengths for AI models. Though there are some subtle differences here that we’ll get to in a moment. The new Sensing Hub is the same, sporting dual micro NPUs for an 85% performance boost and a 20% efficiency improvement for voice activation and similar workloads.

Essentially, customers receive the same core day-to-day performance and essential features whether they have the Elite Gen 6 or Elite Extreme Gen 6.
