GTA 6 Has Already Sold Nearly 8 Million Copies, One Data Firm Claims

We are two weeks out from the start of Grand Theft Auto 6‘s global launch, and one data firm is claiming it’s already sold nearly 8 million copies. Not surprisingly, it also claims roughly three quarters of those sales are on PlayStation 5.

Data firm Sensor Tower has updated its GTA 6 sales tracker and currently has Rockstar Games’ latest open-world crime simulator at an estimated 7.71 million copies sold via pre-orders alone. That comes out to an estimated $751 million in revenue, with Sensor Tower claiming a breakdown of roughly 74 percent of copies sold on PS5 compared to 26 percent on Xbox Series X/S.

The trendline shows an uptick in the rate of pre-orders sold following the extended gameplay reveal on Netflix, and it sure seems like Sony’s exclusive marketing campaign for GTA 6 has helped give it a bump over Xbox. The fact that a base PS5 is cheaper than a base Xbox Series X could also be a factor. According to Sensor Tower, 1.97 million copies have been pre-ordered on Xbox compared to 5.74 million on PS5.

Given Xbox’s struggles this console generation, that number isn’t great, but it could be much worse. Especially when it has to resort to sticking hardware inside of an alligator to get around marketing prohibitions on talking about GTA 6 coming to Xbox Series X/S.

71 million pre-order sales in perspective, Cyberpunk 2077 reportedly amassed around 8 million total pre-orders in the run up to its 2020 launch.
