All current consoles cost a fortune, and that’s only going to get a lot worse before it gets better. GameStop has managed to find a way to speed up that process by charging $1,500 for a PS5 Pro, $600 more than it would cost to buy a new one.
An internal memo distributed to GameStop employees circulated earlier this week, informing staff of the imminent price hike for the Pro. It noted that the pre-owned console costing $600 more than a new one was “intentional", as many would have, understandably, assumed it to be a typo or a mistake.
The idea that a store would charge $1,500 for a $900 console seemed so unfeasible that many, myself included, shrugged off the leaked memo as fake. Well, turns out it’s real. Even though the memo notes that the price increase won’t go into effect until October 16, GameStop has gone ahead and executed its plan early, perhaps due to word getting out.
Right now on GameStop’s website, a pre-owned or refurbished PS5 Pro is priced at $1499.99. If you have a GameStop Pro membership, you can get the latest PlayStation console for the low, low price of $1429.99. You could buy yourself a brand new copy of Wolverine to play on your expensive new console with the money you save.
There are a few schools of thought on why GameStop has done this. You only need to go to the store page for a brand new PS5 Pro to find the first.
