Frustrating as it can be, certain games cannot last forever. Any RPG that needs an online connection faces the threat of disconnection, and Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis will succumb to this fate soon. Before that happens, Square Enix will also shut down FF14 Mobile in China on September 30, ending that experiment before a global expansion. Sadly, these two games aren't the only RPGs set to sunset soon.
As movements like Stop Killing Games strive to preserve projects, the current situation offers no obvious course of action, and the RPGs shutting down in October seem unlikely to spark community workarounds that keep the flame alive. Hopefully, my fear proves unfounded, but I wouldn't bet against it. If you want to say your goodbyes to these games, now is the time.
Square Enix has shut down plenty of Final Fantasy mobile games, to the point that it is almost expected nowadays. While not coming as a massive surprise, Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis's closure hurts more than most, as the concept of a compilation project that covers everything FF7 sounds fantastic on paper. Unlike All the Bravest or The First Soldier, which were poorly received and never built any momentum, Ever Crisis had incredible production value, ATB combat, ambitious scope, and worthwhile original content, mainly in the form of young Sephiroth's story arc.
A long-enduring franchise like Final Fantasy isn't immune to disappointments, as illustrated by these games that didn't quite live up to expectations.
However, the RPG incorporated way too many mobile gaming pitfalls, including a punishing grind revolving around an unforgiving gacha system for weapons and costumes.
